Link connectivity checking method and apparatus
Disclosed are a link connectivity checking method and apparatus. The method comprises: sending an Internet control messages protocol (ICMP) message to a destination device of a link, the ICMP message carrying an identifier used for identifying that the ICMP message is a message used for pinging the link connectivity; acquiring an ICMP response message corresponding to a media access control (MAC) address of the destination device; determining whether the ICMP response message carries the identifier carried in the ICMP message; and if the determining result is yes, determining that the link with the destination device is available. By means of the present invention, the problem in the prior art that the connectivity of a link from a network access device to a user equipment cannot be checked is solved, and accordingly, the link between the network access device and the user equipment can be checked.

Employing the method of the present invention, the middle router which supports policy-based routing is able to transfer the message independent of IP head of the said diagnosis-protocol-message, but select routing according to said stream description information included in the message, thereby being capable of keeping the consistency between the diagnosis-protocol-message and routing of the service stream. The purpose that is actually diagnosing routing or correctly diagnosing route is achieved.

Methods and systems for estimating available bandwidth on an internet access network are presented. A method includes: (a) transmitting one or more Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP) echo request packets to a device residing on the network at a first bit rate; (b) receiving one or more ICMP echo reply packets corresponding to the one or more ICMP echo request packets responsive to step (a); and (c) determining a second bit rate for the one or more ICMP echo reply packets. If the second bit rate is less than the first bit rate, available bandwidth is estimated based on the second bit rate. If the second bit rate is not less than the first bit rate, steps (a), (b) and (c) are repeated. The first bit rate is increased for each iteration, until the second bit rate is less than the first bit rate, and then available bandwidth is estimated based on the second bit rate.

Determining throughput between hosts
An apparatus and method of determining throughput between a first host and a second host of at least one network is disclosed. The method includes the first host intentionally corrupting ICMP packets by manipulating a checksum of the ICMP packets. The first host sends the corrupted ICMP packets to the second host through the at least one network. The first host additionally sends non-corrupted ICMP packets to the second host. Based on responses from second host to the ICMP packets, the first host estimates a throughput between the first host and the second host. The throughput includes a first direction throughput from the first host to the second host, a second direction throughput from the second host to the first host, and a round trip throughput between the first host and the second host.

Network availability monitor
A method and system for measuring availability of a high-availability network that includes interconnected routers and switches. One embodiment of the present invention provides a network availability monitoring device that is coupled to the network. In this embodiment, ICMP (Internet Control Message Protocol) pings are sent from the network availability monitoring device at regular intervals to the leaf nodes only. Network availability is then determined based on the total number of ICMP pings attempted and the total number of ping responses returned. In this way, when a non-leaf node goes down, the network availability monitoring device may not report this as non-availability if leaf nodes are not affected. One embodiment of the present invention employs a rule-based detection algorithm that detects leaf nodes in the network. Areas of the network that share similar geographic, topology or service characteristics may be grouped together as availability groups. Group availability can be determined based on a total number of ICMP pings sent to the leaf nodes of the availability groups and a total number of ping responses sent by the leaf nodes of the groups. The present invention also provides for an auto-annotation mechanism that assists network engineers in pinpointing root causes of a network problem.
