Link connectivity checking method and apparatus

Disclosed are a link connectivity checking method and apparatus. The method comprises: sending an Internet control messages protocol (ICMP) message to a destination device of a link, the ICMP message carrying an identifier used for identifying that the ICMP message is a message used for pinging the link connectivity; acquiring an ICMP response message corresponding to a media access control (MAC) address of the destination device; determining whether the ICMP response message carries the identifier carried in the ICMP message; and if the determining result is yes, determining that the link with the destination device is available. By means of the present invention, the problem in the prior art that the connectivity of a link from a network access device to a user equipment cannot be checked is solved, and accordingly, the link between the network access device and the user equipment can be checked.

A method for diagnosing the router which supports strategy-selectingpath

A route diagnosis method which supports policy-based routing is applied in the network which includes a router supporting policy-based routing, which comprises: adding stream description information of service stream in diagnosis-protocol-message, and containing a router warning option in IP head of the said diagnosis-protocol-message; based on the router supporting policy-based routing receiving said diagnosis-protocol-message, routing according to said stream description information in the said diagnosis-protocol-message; said diagnosis-protocol-message is processed as standard diagnosis-protocol-message by the router which is independent of policy-based routing. Employing the method of the present invention, the middle router which supports policy-based routing is able to transfer the message independent of IP head of the said diagnosis-protocol-message, but select routing according to said stream description information included in the message, thereby being capable of keeping the consistency between the diagnosis-protocol-message and routing of the service stream. The purpose that is actually diagnosing routing or correctly diagnosing route is achieved.

Bandwidth estimation algorithm using internet control message protocol (icmp) echo request

Methods and systems for estimating available bandwidth on an internet access network are presented. A method includes: (a) transmitting one or more Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP) echo request packets to a device residing on the network at a first bit rate; (b) receiving one or more ICMP echo reply packets corresponding to the one or more ICMP echo request packets responsive to step (a); and (c) determining a second bit rate for the one or more ICMP echo reply packets. If the second bit rate is less than the first bit rate, available bandwidth is estimated based on the second bit rate. If the second bit rate is not less than the first bit rate, steps (a), (b) and (c) are repeated. The first bit rate is increased for each iteration, until the second bit rate is less than the first bit rate, and then available bandwidth is estimated based on the second bit rate.

Link extenders with link alive propagation

A link extender is used for extending links between end nodes or router nodes in a system area network. Nodes in the network transmit link alive symbols to indicate that a link is alive. The link extender includes a link alive propagation feature for propagating the loss of link alive between ports of the link extender.

Method and apparatus for application to permanently reside in background of operating system

A method and apparatus for an application to permanently reside in a background of an operating system. The method comprises: receive a target application start request, and create a main process for a target application corresponding to the target application start request (101); the main process calls a function to create a host keep-alive process (102); the host keep-alive process calls a function to create a keep-alive process, and has the keep-alive process hosted by an operating system after the keep-alive process is created (103); construct a connection between the main process and the keep-alive process, and trigger the main process and the keep-alive process to monitor each other according to the constructed connection (104); and upon detecting that the main process or the keep-alive process is closed, start the closed process (105). By using the solution, an application can permanently reside in a background of an operating system.

Determining throughput between hosts

An apparatus and method of determining throughput between a first host and a second host of at least one network is disclosed. The method includes the first host intentionally corrupting ICMP packets by manipulating a checksum of the ICMP packets. The first host sends the corrupted ICMP packets to the second host through the at least one network. The first host additionally sends non-corrupted ICMP packets to the second host. Based on responses from second host to the ICMP packets, the first host estimates a throughput between the first host and the second host. The throughput includes a first direction throughput from the first host to the second host, a second direction throughput from the second host to the first host, and a round trip throughput between the first host and the second host.

OPERATING SYSTEM FINGERPRINT DETECTION

One primary aspect of the present disclosure is a method of remotely identifying operating system of a remote network element, wherein the remote network element has a plurality of ports and an Internet connection, the method comprising: scanning the ports of the remote network element for determining which ports are open of the plurality of ports; sending, by a processor, a sequence of packets to the remote network element over the internet, and wherein packets in the sequence of packets are different from one another; receiving reply-packets from the remote network element, wherein the reply-packets are the reply of the remote network element to the packets, and analyzing a signature of the reply-packets; and identifying the operating system of remote network element by comparing the signature with documented signatures of existing operating systems.

Detecting if a secure link is alive

A communication system includes a data network that is coupled to various nodes, including routers. In one example arrangement, a first router is part of a first local network and a second router is part of a second local network. Each router includes a security gateway module and a keep-alive module. The security gateway module is capable of establishing a secure link, such as one according to an Internet Protocol Security (IPsec) protocol, over the data network. The keep-alive module sends one or more ping messages over the secure link to the remote router (or a node coupled to the router), which responds with appropriate ping replies to indicate that a link is alive.

Switching apparatus

A switching apparatus for use in a network includes a packet reception processing unit which generates a reply packet as a response to a request packet having a virtual local area network tag and transmitted for a ping test via a network to the switching apparatus, and sets the same priority class in a virtual local area network tag of the reply packet as that in the virtual local area network tag of the request packet, wherein the switching apparatus performs priority control on the reply packet based on the priority class in the virtual local area network tag of the reply packet.

Network availability monitor

A method and system for measuring availability of a high-availability network that includes interconnected routers and switches. One embodiment of the present invention provides a network availability monitoring device that is coupled to the network. In this embodiment, ICMP (Internet Control Message Protocol) pings are sent from the network availability monitoring device at regular intervals to the leaf nodes only. Network availability is then determined based on the total number of ICMP pings attempted and the total number of ping responses returned. In this way, when a non-leaf node goes down, the network availability monitoring device may not report this as non-availability if leaf nodes are not affected. One embodiment of the present invention employs a rule-based detection algorithm that detects leaf nodes in the network. Areas of the network that share similar geographic, topology or service characteristics may be grouped together as availability groups. Group availability can be determined based on a total number of ICMP pings sent to the leaf nodes of the availability groups and a total number of ping responses sent by the leaf nodes of the groups. The present invention also provides for an auto-annotation mechanism that assists network engineers in pinpointing root causes of a network problem.

Method of establishing a route redundancy in a data transmission system using static routes, this system comprising a plurality of networks and a plurality of routers, a defined router (70) being able to use several routes to reach a destination network (72). This method comprises the steps of defining all the static routes toward the destination network, verifying for each defined static route whether the destination network is reachable resulting in a set of static routes considered as eligible to be used, defining a priority for each route of the set of static routes, and selecting the static route having the highest priority as the route to be used. A conventional static route may be used if none of these static routes is available.
